Setting Up Your First Hookah at Home

A good home hookah session comes down to a few fundamentals: the right charcoal, a proper pack, clean equipment, and a flavor that suits your mood.

Setting up your first hookah is intimidating. There's a lot of gear and a lot of opinions. Here's the no-fluff version of what you actually need to get a clean, smooth session at home.

The hookah. A mid-size traditional hookah (24–32 inches) is the sweet spot for first-timers. Easier to pack, easier to clean, more forgiving.

The bowl. Phunnel-style bowls are easier to pack than traditional Egyptian bowls. Start there.

The charcoal. Use natural coconut charcoal (CocoUrth, Titanium, Coco Nara). Never use quick-light briquettes — they ruin the flavor and add chemicals.

The shisha. Al Fakher and Starbuzz are excellent starting points. Pack it loose and fluffy in the bowl, leveled but not pressed.

The session. Heat-management foil or HMD on top, 2–3 coals to start, rotate every 10–15 minutes. Let the bowl warm up before you start pulling hard.

Take Flight carries everything you need to set up at home — hookahs, bowls, coals, shisha, HMDs, and replacement parts. Stop in and we'll walk you through your first build.
